Recommendations for outsourcing php development

Rachel Armitage

Dear all,

We are exploring options to accelerate the development of our multi-modal travel search service and are beginning to consider outsourcing.

We are quite wary about going down this route since we've heard both examples of where this has worked out very well, and on the other hand, where it has not been an effective use of time or cash.

I wondered if any of your have recommendations of individual firms or developers that you were particularly satisfied with, in terms of quality of result and value for money.  We are developing in php, so would be looking for that specialism.

Many thanks in advance,

Rachel

Re: Recommendations for outsourcing php development

Paul Klipp
Dear Rachel,

My team doesn't work with PHP anymore, but we've got two competitors in Krakow who I know to do good work who do work with PHP. They are codesprinters.com and applicake.com. If you contact them, please tell them that I referred you. Given that we're competitors, it should make for a pleasant surprise.

Best regards,

Paul

Re: Recommendations for outsourcing php development

Geoffrey McCaleb
In reply to this post by Rachel Armitage

Hi Rachel,

A lot would depend on your abilities/time/desire to project manage whoever you bring in. If your budget is good, but your free time is not, then there are a wealth of offshore groups you could take your project too. Don't just base your choice on a recommendation from this list, get a client list and ask to contact former customers if your not sure.

Me personally I've had good experience with Vitaliy Opryshko and the guys over at IT Crimea (http://itcrimea.com/). They are a strong PHP shop and their code and dedication is pretty good. They have a lot of Western exposure as well, from small-fry startups like mine to more established corporates. Even though my gigs were small, I never thought they put me or my work on the back burner.

However, if you perfer to have more direct control and have a wider pool of candidates to choose from, I've also had good success with oDesk (www.odesk.com). Think ebay but for contracting, complete with detailed work history and feedback.

The one piece of advice is take your time agreeing with the provider about the deliverable before you start. Things like frameworks, code quality/documenting, w3c validation, performance metrics, usability (etc etc) all are things many providers happily ignore unless you make it clear up front.

Good Luck,

Geoffrey

Hi Rachel,

I recommend KonoLabs.

Cuan, their director, is very experienced in developing web applications. He is quite active in london web community.

It is definitely helpful to have a guy like him to manage your project. He knows what technology you need to get your project done. He also knows how to get your project done in an efficient manner and still keep good quality. He is straightforward and upfront. I personally really like his upfront approach. They have strong oversea teams as well to keep the cost low. Hope it helps.

Karlheinz Toni-2

Hi Rachel,

I'd like to throw http://www.luckywarepro.com/ into the round. They are Ukraine based, very reliable and cost-efficient.

Mainly, they have co-developed two of the three biggest German social networking sites. The CEO is female and Professor at a local University if that should be of any importance to you.

Bests,
Charly

RE: Recommendations for outsourcing php development

Michael Fotoohi
In reply to this post by Rachel Armitage
Hi,

I may be able to help you a little on this.

We are a well established UK based company with offices abroad. Currently I
have several teams of developers working for clients such as Vodafone, O2,
Orange, Adidas, Airmiles etc developing a multitude of applications and
maintaining their backbone infrastructure and sites.

The beauty is that the cost is based on traditional outsourcing pricing
except that you are dealing with a UK company so there are none of the usual
worries there.

I may be able to help and structure some of your work for you at a very
reasonable cost. If that is of any help to you then please contact me.

Regards,
Michael Fotoohi

RE: Recommendations for outsourcing php development

Aroxo
In reply to this post by Rachel Armitage

Hello Rachel,

My name is Matt Rogers and I have a PHP out-sourcing business based out of India. We follow the on/off-shore model which means that you contract and deal with a UK business, all the account and project management as well as the QC, design and specification is done out of the UK, but the development is performed in India.

It’s a great way to get the best of both worlds. More than happy to have a chat, or meet face to face if you’re London-based.

Either way, best of luck with Zoombu and congrats on making the Seedcamp final.

Cheers,
