Re: Re: [entrepreneur-1056] London Open Coffe Meetup

Sophie Garrett

I find this group and the Daily Digest invaluable.  I’ve followed so many leads and taken on board many ideas: on a wide range of subjects.  Of all the hundreds of things I subscribe to, this is one of only about five that I make an effort to read every day and I’ve recommended this groups to countless other people.

I’ve contributed occasionally whenever I think I can add something.  I’ve never been to the actual meetups yet. I will if I can, but I’m based in Norwich, and although I’m in London several times a month, it is rarely on a Thursday.  I would think that the networking opportunity of the meetups is considerable.

I know that there is an archive, but it could be a bit more user-friendly.  I wish that the archive had each set of threads and that it was searchable: more like a forum.  I tend to keep all the daily digests as these are easier to search.  I’ve been back through Daily Digests many times.

I’m not sure of the mechanics of the Daily Digest, but sometimes I see replies to questions, but can’t find the original question.  Do some messages not get into the Daily Digest?

Please take my comments as being entirely constructive: it is a great group.

Kind Regards

Sophie Garrett

Same here - I've never yet made it to OpenCoffee meeting in person, but have found this discussion list incredibly interesting and useful

Sophie Hi,

I mirror your views - it's a very valuable group.

I sometimes find keeping on top of all the threads a little challenging but we will all make an effort to do so for a discussion that is relevant and important enough.....

Thanks.

Hardeep.

i also mirror Sophie 's views , this group has been invaluable to me as an information source,  it has given me leads to things i would have never thought about .
i didn't know there was a daily digest option though,
i do find the threads a bit confusing to follow especially if it is a successful thread.

It can be viewed in threaded mode, and is searchable.

As a newbie, I'm with Sophie on this one too.

In so much

1) I don't live in London, though to be fair, not THAT far out but it's just really tight to get in early for Open Coffee because the fares are like x2 the amount they are after 10:00am. At this moment in time, I just can't afford that and be able to show why I spent that amount, though I would like to go to an Open Coffee if it was an Open Afternoon tea! ;-)

2) And yes, the meet up site isn't very user friendly and the fact that no one really comments on the forum can't help but put you off.

3) Yep, I've found this invaluable and have learnt a lot through this forum I've not done doing my MBA-it's more real and less academic, more 'in your face' and I also make sure to try and keep up with the threads as it is one of a few inc Twitter that I've learnt tonnes off!

4) Adam, yes it has helped my business venture HUGELY but I think it's a case of some people are more sharing then others with information. Some see this to make contacts. Or networks. Some see this to sell their product or services. I think these factors take into account how much business support people will give on a thread.

I'm on a lot of Social Networks Adam and it's a tough one because quite a few-good ones-will ask you to fill in a few questions to state why you are here. And for example you will put 'looking for a partner, support or business advice' and you expect people who've put 'looking to support early start up, or to partner' would fit in with what you want. That would be the matching system factor right? But I've found that no, they don't want to support or consult. I think many just click that box.

So this makes it hard to understand what people genuinely want from a forum or network, though it could be the way these questions are asked? Anyhow, like I said, I think for a lot of people it's a case of 'if' and 'when' something catches your eye or is of use to your venture.

5) Richard has a great point and I too am on gmail. I'd advice anyone who wants to follow threads to go on gmail because it consiladates it all in one email and you don't see a tonnes of emails one after the other..

Thanks,

Hi

I see the mailing list as being more useful than things like blogs, tweets are all. But this is possibly because I am from the days of usenet, when if you had a question you posted it on a list, and if you had an answer you replied to a question. Of course since then, the web has changed alot, and instead of being a resource of where you could learn, it has fast become a place where you now sell/earn (just realised that rhymed).

Due to this, people now have various needs from the web, some just wish to promote what they do, in order to gain a few consulting dollars, others promote what they sell, in order of course to earn revenue. One can view this easily from the mailing list over the last few weeks, there have been lots of posts about events, of course the end motive being about making money. Others redirect users to their own blog posts, rather than posting the article on the list. But this is true with every list and every forum, people use it for their own needs.

I recently had a discussion whereby we could have selective subject headings eg [oc - event], [oc - advice] type of thing, so that users could read what they wanted to read. I am not sure how people would feel about that...but thats for another day...

I read the post about the facebook group, and I have not managed to join as yet, since FB is not really for business, well not for me, its personal, and even then I tend not to frequent it much. Maybe a linkedin group would be better, especially since that would give visibility to people as to who is on the list, and for all those who want to use it to network, and aid business, it would allow one to see if an OC member could aid an introduction. I am not sure if there is already a group on linkedin, if not, and people would like one, do let me know.

What I do find a little strange, and again this is from a user who found mailing lists in the early 90's a huge help, is that people don't really ask questions. The questions I get asked when I meet face to face, people will not ask on the list. I have tried on many a occassion to work out why this maybe, and have come to the conclusion that people feel the very act of asking a question is the admission to lack of knowledge, and hence would prefer not to make it public. To me this is what this list actually lacks, questions, not answers. I still ask questions, not just on this list, but everywhere, I find that sometimes you get far too close to a business, and the simple act of writing a ppt means that you need to get someone else to review it, not because you do not understand your business, but because you are too close to it. Hence I wish more people would ask more questions...in america I find its different.

I think alot of people may not really have got much business from the list either since we do not know what each of us does, I tried to create a list of companies a while ago, but got such a limited response, I now feel a place like linkedin, where the company by just joining/connecting would be enough to give people insight into what they do.

As for gaining from this list, personally I have gained, I have met alot of people, and learnt a little. Financially I have not gained, I don't send people to my blog, I see no point (since it was updated sometime ago), I give advice for free. People ask why I do not charge, well I do, but if you want free advice, my advice is post on the list, you will get the wisdom of crowds, and in the process I may learn a little more also.... in addition working on a startup takes up alot of time, hence providing advice for money is limited to my 20% other activity time (for those who don't know that's what MS and google try to give employees to ensure they engage on other projects/things)

I would really like to get more startups on this list, it would be nice to get OC mentioned on techcrunch, I see Mike does post here referring to posts on techcrunch in order to promote TC, hence something in reverse would be useful also. I guess that applies to some of the other blogs on here to, especially since this list differs in what it offers to most if not all the blogs.  I find the meetup forum thing confusing, and I know alot of people at OC do not even know of the mailing list, so I guess we all need to spread the word a little,  that way it will get even bigger and better.

Oh before I forget, people send me linkedin requests to my feelin_tired email address, please don't, please have a look at my linkedin profile, my other email address is there, send the request to that one, so that I can reply, otherwise linkedin throws up an error message to me.

As a newbie, I'm with Sophie on this one too.

In so much

1) I don't live in London, though to be fair, not THAT far out but it's just really tight to get in early for Open Coffee because the fares are like x2 the amount they are after 10:00am. At this moment in time, I just can't afford that and be able to show why I spent that amount, though I would like to go to an Open Coffee if it was an Open Afternoon tea! ;-)

Hi everyone,

I agree with several contributors to this thread that something less dematerialized than a mailing list might help OpenCoffee expand both its reach and depth. This is where using existing social networks might help.

Facebook remains by far the world's biggest social network. Although it is not dedicated to business, a lot of social activity already takes place on that network. In a world where open collaboration is gaining strength (open source, opencoffee etc.) I would also question the boundaries of what is "business" and what isn't...

I encourage you to join the London OpenCoffee's new Facebook page: http://bit.ly/btHfD9

By the way , a few contributors seemed concerned about their privacy when joining a Facebook page. With the right privacy settings on their Facebook page that really should not be a problem.

Kind regards,

Greg

Subject: Re: Re: [entrepreneur-1056] London Open Coffe Meetup

Thanks,

Irene

Hi Iqbal

Oh, thank you, thank you for the link.  This is miles better.

I vaguely remembered posts about a better archive, but I’ve looked a several  times and only found the archive on the OpenCoffee website.  Is there a link to this from there?  Maybe I’ve missed it?

Maybe there should be a link on the Daily Digest?

Kind Regards

Guys,

If everyone would like to meet up later in the afternoon, I'm more than happy too. Somewhere sunny, i.e. the Opera thingy on Southbank (we had a TC thing there once?)

Thanks,

Geoff
